These ancient figurines are not the "fertility idols" as patriarchal programming of the 19th and 20th centuries claimed. At their time of discovery, female depictions could not be of significance beyond an homage to their reproductive nature or to entice sexual desire. Instead, they represent the religion of our Neolithic Ancestors.
Far from being limited to their life-giving abilities, these goddesses symbolize the universe itself for a myriad of rituals. These include rituals of death, regeneration, growth, fraternity, and the cultivation of plants and animals. The mysteries of creation and transformation are mirrored in the archaic feminine experience of bleeding, creating life, breastfeeding, fire-making, seed-planting, and so on, which were cause for celebration with these figurines. They were a testament to the cosmic womb that composed the existence of all life on Earth, including the development of societies.
Despite the figures' modifications or exaggerations, they were not symbols of eroticism. Instead, they represented different sacred functions for worship. For instance, enlarged breasts embody nourishment and the renewal of life. Emphasized buttocks, thighs, and vulvas signified life-giving sustenance. Bird-like features personified 'spiritus'— the breath of life, and decorative spirals indicated the feminine life source, forever flowing and growing.
